Whereas the use of agriculture crops as a source of basic ingredients for synthetic pharmaceuticals is emerging as an additional economic opportunity for farmers; and Whereas the climate and isolated geography of the Western Slope may provide an ideal environment for the development of such pharmaceutical crops; and Whereas in order to protect human health and local economies, it is essential that adequate steps be taken to ensure against the potential cross-pollination of pharmaceutical crops and traditional feed and food crops; Now, therefore, be it resolved that CLUB 20 supports the development of bio-pharming in Colorado – the use of agriculture crops as a source of basic ingredients for synthetic pharmaceuticals – as long as the Colorado and U.S. Departments of Agriculture ensure that adequate rules, laws and necessary research are in place to protect the safety of the domestic food and feed supplies; and Be it further resolved that CLUB 20 believes that such bio-pharming opportunities should be limited to only those isolated areas which can provide adequate prevention against potential cross-pollination of other crops.
